영국에서 제작된 로드스터이지만, 미국에서 더욱 열광했던 자동차로 “미국인이 사랑한 최초의 스포츠카”라는 평가를 받았다. 생산량의 75%이상이 미국으로 수출되어 자동차 경주뿐만 아니라 도로에서도 큰 인기를 누렸다. 필 힐(Phil Hill)이나 리치 긴더(Richie Ginther) 등 수많은 스타급 레이서들이 MG TD를 몰면서 자동차 경주 인생을 시작했다. 단순히 아름다운 디자인 때문이 아니라 운전의 재미도 사람들을 매료시켰다. 차체가 낮고 운전석이 뒤로 밀려나 있어 운전하는 동안 짜릿한 기분을 맛 볼 수 있다. 19인치 바퀴와 820kg에 불과한 무게는 스포츠카의 기본인 달리기 성능을 높이는 데 큰 장점으로 작용했다.
